Marvel has released two press releases today with teaser covers for their upcoming October releases. The first, for Incredible Hercules #136 is cheerfully titled ‘Have At Thee! Writer: Garth Ennis
Art: Steve Dillon
Colours: Matt Hollingsworth
Publisher: Marvel Comics

Garth Ennis should be the perfect writer for The Punisher. I say ‘should’ as, surprising as it seems given how important Frank Castle was to my early comic book education (and also knowing what a great fit Ennis is with this type of violent story), Punisher: War [...]

I’ve sat in many a discussion over this hypothetical superhero movie or that, getting into how Actor A would be GREAT for the role of Comic Character B, so on and so forth. I’ve developed the opinion that, when it comes to the main roles in a superhero movie, the most important thing is that the actor should be the precise blend of star recognition, facial resemblance and acting ability, that s/he be completely swallowed up by the character s/he portrays…This is where Daredevil fell short.

Now comes the biggest test in terms of the success of the Punisher’s integration into the Marvel Universe – the start of a two-part tie-in to the massive Marvel blockbuster summer event, Secret Invasion.

There is so much quality on show here that I cannot bring myself to give this a low rating, but there are still too many shortcomings and unknowns involved that prevent me from giving this a ringing endorsement.

A celebration of Mutant Kitsch in Uncanny X-Men #500, the new Sinister, Swierczynski’s Mortal Iron Fist, a second chance for the New Warriors, Christos Gage’s Thunderbolts, Wolverine leading Alpha Flight, the usual Secret Invasion fillers, Ultimate X-Junkies, Hulk dog-sitting Cerberus… You BET we have a lot to cover!

Spidey sings the DD theme song, Ghost Rider takes to the Good Book, Archangel is feeling blue, MODOK makes a splash, Longshot gets lucky, Hercules as well, Sue with Namor even more so, Captain America becomes a Queen… and the Avengers challenge Galactus to a Texas Hold’Em tournament!

So Marvel released 23 titles this week. Out of which six have ‘Avengers’ in their title, six more are Secret Invasion tie-ins, two are drawn by Takeshi Miyazawa, two are written by Matt Fraction, five of them feature Hulks of three different colours in total, but only one features two favourite super-heroes in cross-dress… -Sigh-

I’ll say it before, and I’ll say it again: Marvel and Spider-Man in particular work best when characters MOVE FORWARD. That was what separated their comics from DC at the time, and that’s when any Marvel comic works best. If you want to grab the interest of the “youth market”? Take a friggin’ chance and create a new one

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #563

Hey, it does what it says on the cover! Spidey versus the Enforcers (perhaps his unintentionally lamest villains) in a bump-car ride in Coney Island…
All that plus [...]
